What is Stress?
Stress can be defined as a reaction which we experience when we cannot cope with a situation. The result may be experienced as a physical, mental or emotional discomfort in the face of perceived danger. Stress is a signal to you that change needs to occur. Without learning ways to relieve chronic stress from your life, your entire being may suffer.
There are three main types of stress: physical, mental and emotional stress. Stress is caused by discomfort in the physical body, which may have been caused by accidents, illness, chemical toxins, a demanding work schedule, or chronic stressors. It is estimated that approximately 90% of today’s illnesses originate from stress, and that most of the modern diseases affecting the heart, blood pressure, digestion, and sleep are symptoms of stress.
Stress is also created by mental and emotional demands on the body. Sometimes, mental and emotional stress can simply be the result of physical stress. Many times, stress is often caused by worries, unhealthy thought patterns, personal beliefs, and attitudes arising from family, work, or relationships.
